I love almost everything about farming! The reasons I love farming are the reasons Justin and I have chosen to stick with it. If not, we would be living in a subdivision and enjoying our evenings from 6:00 until bed time! Even with the long hours, and virtually no days off, it’s still worth it!
Do you remember a few weeks ago when I told you about our barn remodeling project? If not, you can read about it here! Before we were able to progress in our project we had to remove and existing grain bin. The one you see in the back right hand side of this picture.
Thing I love about farming #1 (in no particular order) – I would rather have my boys watch this than watch T.V. during the summer.
When this barn was first built over 30 years ago the grain bin was placed just outside the barn. Obviously, grain was stored in the bin. It had some kind of auger system to move the grain from the bin into the barn. Each cow had a “bucket” of grain available to her as milk was extracted from her. I think the cows loved it, I mean who doesn’t like to eat? Apparently, the cows filled up on grain which is not a complete balanced diet. Then they didn’t want to eat other foods when they left the barn. We do not use the grain auger system anymore. The grain bin no longer needs to be right next to the barn. And it was in the way of our barn expansion. So we decided to move it to another location on the farm.
Reason #2 I love farming- Look at all of my boys being together. Farming is a family activity!
Apparently, when you move a grain bin you attach a tire to the hook of a crane. Lift the crane up. The tire holds the weight of the grain bin. Or something like that!
Reason #3 I love farming – My boys can learn how to solve problems in very unconventional ways. I’m guessing they are going to need to solve a few more problems in their lives and unconventional solutions might come in handy!
Here it goes! This is the big lift!
The grain bin is no longer in the way. It’s going to it’s new home!
Reason #4 I love farming- You know this is more exciting than what you will see in your neighborhood today. In fact, I didn’t take pictures but we ended up with a few neighbors as spectators. They jumped right in and helped too! Love farm neighbors!
Of course during the grain bin moving party Justin’s phone rang, LOTS! He had to leave the excitement for a minute and the boys wouldn’t hear of being left behind.
Reason #5 I love farming- My boys get to spend more time with their Dad than about anybody I know! And that’s a good thing, except when the garden needs weeded!
Does this boy look hot and tired or what?
