Slow Cooker Spicy Orange Chicken Drumsticks – These babies are falling off the bone when they come out of the slow cooker, then they get basted with a sweet and spicy barbecue sauce...grab a napkin they are messy in a good way!
Recipe type: Main Dish
Cuisine: American
Serves: 6 servings
  • 4 pounds chicken drumsticks
  • ½ cup chicken broth or orange juice, either works well
  • RUB:
  • 1 T. garlic powder
  • 1 T. chili powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • cayene pepper, to taste (we are wimps in my family so I only used a dash you can add as much as you can handle)
  • 1 T. kosher salt
  • GLAZE:
  • 1½ c. prepared barbecue sauce
  • ½ c. orange marmalade
  • 2 T. orange zest
  • 2 T. orange juice
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  1. Add rub ingredients to a gallon sealable bag.
  2. Next, add chicken drumsticks and shake to coat.
  3. Then, set drumsticks in slow cooker.
  4. Pour chicken broth or orange juice to the bottom of slow cooker.
  5. Mix prepared barbecue sauce, orange marmalade, orange zest, 2 T. orange juice and chili powder together. Drizzle half a cup of sauce over drumsticks, reserve remaining sauce for later.
  6. Cook in slow cooker on high for 4 hours.
  7. Preheat oven to broiler, I leave my rack about 6 inches from the broiler element.
  8. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, spray with non-stick baking spray. Remove drumsticks from slow cooker and lay on baking sheet.
  9. Baste drumsticks with sauce.
  10. Broil for 3-5 minutes. Remove from oven, baste again, and broil for 3-5 more minutes.
  11. Serve immediately! I like to save a little extra sauce for dunking!
