He needs me for lots of reasons! It’s true! I hope you enjoy this little story about our date nights! This is exactly how life is on the farm and at the end of the day, I think it’s all worth it!
Sometimes we find ourselves stuck on the farm for weeks at a time. Most of the time I’m totally okay with it, especially with the invention of Amazon Prime!
But then again, there are days I just crave a little date night with Justin. You know a chance to talk to him for a minute and catch up on all the little things husbands and wives need to talk about occasionally.
Every once in awhile Justin feels the urge to go on a date too, but as every farm wife knows he has an agenda. An agenda that involves cows!
He asked me out the other day and there was a catch! He needed to deliver some bulls to a dairy about an hour from home that happened to be closer to town. Anytime you’re getting closer to town it qualifies as a date right?
Justin came in to get ready to go. I had been at school and visiting friends earlier in the day which means I actually had make-up on and was wearing “town” clothes. I drug my dirty work jeans out of the laundry basket, threw on my hoodie, and pulled my hair back in a ponytail. That’s how you get ready to go on a date when you’re married to a farmer. See when I go on a date night with my husband I get “un” dolled up because I’m pretty sure he’s going to need me!
I always ask him if I need boots? How about gloves? Nope!
Ya right! I always stick them in an old Walmart bag and bring it along…just in case!
As soon as we got into the pickup his phone started ringing, and ringing, and ringing. Yesterday he was arranging an Eagle Scout project for a boy who he is helping, talking to an employee, negotiating a feed contract, talking to his Dad about the farm, ordering a load of corn, talking to an employee, and he coordinated a meeting.
I have learned to prepare myself for that part of the date too! I always bring a good cookbook or magazine along. I have to entertain myself while he’s over there doing his thing.
Before we leave, I always ask if I’m going to have to help. Should I pack yucky shoes? Gloves?
Of course not is what he always says. So I pack some yucky shoes and gloves. And off we go. Yesterday Carson’s boots were in the pickup so I borrowed his!
This is about the point Justin starts to realize what I already knew. He needs some help and I happen to be there! I told you he needs me!
Yesterday I had to stand in this little hole, and hold the gates, so the bulls wouldn’t get out on their way to the pens. Sometimes I have to direct him while he backs up. Sometimes I have to help load a bull that doesn’t look quite right back into the trailer. No matter what, I get a job. As I said, he needs me!
He checks each bull one last time just to make sure they are all healthy and ready to be sold. He checks the gates to make sure they are all securely closed. I change my shoes and we are off. Off to find a place to go eat with a parking lot big enough to park a stock trailer!
I have learned to take date nights when I can get it. If I never went gate holding, cow chasing date nights, date nights would be non-existent. Honestly, I don’t mind most of the time because it’s at least a chance to be together. I’m not going to lie though, I want to throw his phone out the window!
So…if your hubby asks you to go on a date to the parts store, or some other manly errand place, just go along! That’s his way of saying he needs you. Not just to hold open the gate, to be his friend. He really does want you to come or he wouldn’t have asked!
